The Pilsen Cellars
Pale lager was invented in Pilsen in 1842, and the brewery still keeps a stretch of the original sandstone cellars in use, with oak barrels lagering at cellar temperature. The tour ends down there with a glass of unfiltered, unpasteurised Urquell that legally cannot be sold anywhere else. Czechs drink more beer per head than any other nation and this is the room that explains why.

Abbey and Lambic
Belgium brews two things nobody else does properly: strong bottle-conditioned ales made under monastic licence, and lambic, spontaneously fermented in open vats by whatever yeast lives in the Senne valley air. The Beer Garden
Munich's beer gardens run on a rule from 1812: you may buy the beer from the brewery and bring your own food to the table. Brewing is a working job and tours fit around it. The mash tun runs on certain days only, so a quiet brewhouse is normal. Drinking ages differ: eighteen across most of Europe, twenty-one in the United States, and photo ID is asked for. Check whether the glasses are included or bought at the bar. And decide in advance how you are getting back, because that is what separates a walking crawl from a minibus day.
